Ballito’s Deno clinches title in Perth cycle champs
Van Heerden came first in the 30-39 age category, pipping his nearest competitor by centimetres at the finish line in a race that saw nearly 10 000 participants.
Ballito’s own Deno van Heerden has continued his winning streak by taking first place in a photo finish during the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic over the weekend after winning first place in his category in the road cycling World Championship in Perth earlier this year.
Van Heerden came first in the 30-39 age category, pipping his nearest competitor by centimetres at the finish line in a race that saw nearly 10 000 participants.
“Racing was good and aggressive,” recounts van Heerden, “There were a few break-away attempts but for the most part we struggled to break from the pack.”

Van Heerden and team-mate Mike Viljoen, who came 4th overall, race under the sponsorship of Bluff Meat Supply and Performance Bikefit.
The Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic is 106km between Maritzburg and Durban and is the oldest classic road cycle race in South Africa (since 1986). The idea of having a bicyle race on the route of the world famous Comrades Marathon was the dream of veteran Springbok cyclist, Dave Wiseman and his friend Tony McMillian.
“It was tough at the very end. I just put my head down and went for it,” van Heerden told The Courier.
Van Heerden finished in 2 hours 37 minutes 11 seconds.
