Ballito cyclist does it for the children

"There were times, where all I have wanted to do is stop and get off the bike but I know that I can push through them and the greater cause of why we are riding is always a great motivation to keep going regardless of how I feel." - Craig Jones

For the seventh time, Ballito cyclist Craig Jones is getting onto his bicycle to tackle the grueling 660km Ride for MRP Foundation from Johannesburg to Durban over two days later this month.

Arguably one of toughest two day road rides in the country, the race is the ultimate test of endurance and character, which Jones has been part of since the beginning in 2010.

“I was part of the group that started the ride so I have a sense of duty to continue with the amazing organising team to ensure that it keeps growing from year to year as a platform for fundraising, so that we can make a difference to the children of South Africa. I also love the physical challenge of the ride and I enjoy meeting new people through it,” said Jones, who together with 39 other cyclists, will take on the challenge from November 27-28.

Cyclists participating in the epic annual ride have raised well over R500,000 since 2010 and this year’s fundraising goal hopes to raise a further R300,000 for the non-profit organisation which focuses on youth development.

“I believe the MRP Foundation is tackling some of the very basic and critical needs in our education system in this country.”

The IDAT International Holdings managing director said the only thing that prepares you for this type of ride is time in the saddle and a good core strength programme.

“I’m doing as much training as I can fit in around a lot of overseas work travel at the moment, but I know what to expect after all these years and I always ensure I am mentally strong and up for it. It never gets easier though and that is the challenge I love.”

Despite his love for the ride, he said he has had some very dark moments on his bike.

“There were times, where all I have wanted to do is stop and get off the bike but I know that I can push through them and the greater cause of why we are riding is always a great motivation to keep going regardless of how I feel.”
