Ballito’s Sarah Glover is fit for life

"The reason I entered was to show people that this kind of fitness and health work is not just about getting onto the stage in 12 weeks, but rather that it is a lifestyle you choose to life" - biokineticist Sarah Glover

When 27-year-old biokineticist Sarah Glover set herself the goal to work towards entering a fitness competition she never thought that she would end up in the top six of the USN Face of Fitness.

“I always wanted to enter the USN Face of Fitness competition which collaborates with Fitness magazine. Every woman in the fitness industry wants to be featured in this magazine,” said Glover, who manages the IMF gym at Zimbali.

“The reason I entered was to show people that this kind of fitness and health work is not just about getting onto the stage in 12 weeks, but rather that it is a lifestyle you choose to life. I started getting serious about my training in the last year or two. I train from Monday to Saturday, focusing on different parts of my body every day. Sundays are usually my day off, although I sometimes go for a run or just do something light.”

When it comes to eating, Glover said she sticks to wholesome, clean food.

“I keep my food basic. I do not add sauces and I stay away from processed food and sugars. I am not too fussed about what proteins and carbs I am eating, as long as the portion sizes are correct. Over weekends, I have cheat meals like sweet potato brownies or home-made seed bars. My weakness is peanut butter and nuts.”

She said once she really started focusing on her training and eating plan, she was amazed to see how her body responded.

“I dropped a lot of weight and picked up muscle, which makes me feel strong and healthy and I feel a lot more confident. It truly has been a big transformation and this lifestyle becomes so addictive.”

Glover said entries for the annual competition are always in September and you need to submit five photos and answer a number of questions about yourself to enter.

“There were 211 entries this year. The judges then cut down to 32 girls, who are announced in the Fitness magazine. From there, the public vote for the top 12 and these girls then go for further interviews until the top six are chosen.”

She said she never expected to make it to the top 32, so being part of the top six was an incredible surprise.

“The top six were sent to Johannesburg last month for a professional photo shoot for the magazine. The whole experience was such a sensory overload! We had professional hair and make up artists, got a tan, had the most amazing bikinis and fitness wear and we stayed in a fantastic hotel. The actual shoot was quite daunting, as all of these professional people are looking at you, while you have an industrial fan blowing on you and you are trying to look good.”

While Glover did not win, she will still have a contract with USN for next year as an ambassador.

“It is a great opportunity, because it is up to you how you use it and how much you do with this next year, which I am really excited about.”
