Exciting year ahead for Dolphins
The Courier got to know one of their stand-out players from last season, Zamani “Zam” Mthembu
2017 has barely started finding its feet and the Ballito Dolphins are already in pre-season training.
The Courier got to know one of their stand-out players from last season, Zamani “Zam” Mthembu, in preparation for an exciting 2017.
The openside flanker scored 12 tries in 14 matches to earn him the For ward Player of the Season award in 2016 and he is looking forward to an even better 2017.
Mthembu, who spends his days as an IT specialist for Spill Doctor SA, told The Courier that he has been a rugby man since his youth.
“I attended Hoerskool Dirkie Uys on the Bluff, where I was the head boy and later went to the University of Pretoria,” said Mthembu, who also spent some time with the Sharks Rugby Academy.
“In my high school days I was a wing but later became a flanker.”
Mthembu said his favourite player would have to be Heinrich Brussow, the former Springbok flanker who currently plays for the NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes in Japan.
“I love his style of play and would like to mold myself after him,” Mthembu said.
“He is definitely one of the best ball fetchers in the game. He knows his job and he’s always on the ball – not to mention that he’s a monster at the break-down.”
Mthembu, who previously played for the College Rovers, was also selected as a member of the 2015 Durban Rugby Sub Union Bisons.
Training for the Dolphins is heating up with Monday evenings at the Ringside Boxing Gym doing strength and aggression training, and Tuesdays and Thursdays on the field at Sugar Rush Park from 5.30pm.
“New players are, as always, more than welcome to join us,” said the club chairman, Kevin Murphy.
Anyone wanting to join or who would like further information email Zam or call him on 078 011 3388.
“We also have a very exciting announcement to make, on March 25 the Dolphins will be taking on the South African Rugby Legends team.”
Founded in 2001, the South African Rugby Legends Association is a registered non-profit company (NPC) with two complimentary objectives: developing rugby at the grassroots level and supporting the needs and interests of Legends.
