Burning rubber with RC car racing
The first big race takes place on February 4, so mark the date in your calendar

Race car enthusiast Deon Gove has been racing remote control cars for nearly 30 years and has just opened what can only be described as a boys’ (and some girls) remote control car heaven at Sugar Rush Park.
Gear Raceway is a race track for remote control cars (1/10th scale) that are purpose made for racing.
The cars are all carbon fibre and aluminium and are fully adjustable.
There are classes for different levels of drivers, from stock classes through to modified – where the cars are capable of over 120kph!
“I have been racing remote control cars since I was about eight,” said Gove.
“My dad bought them for my brother and I, and I have been hooked ever since.”
Races will be held once a month at Gear, and there will be practice days in-between.
The first big race takes place on February 4, so mark the date in your calendar.
Gove explained that for now you need your own remote control car, though he is looking into expanding to a point where one can hire a car for the day.
“You can either pay a membership fee or a daily fee to use the track.”
There will also be five national events each year and Gear Raceway will be hosting the second nationals for 2017 on April 27 to April 30.
This year the nationals will be highly contested as the world championships will be held in Welkom in the Free State in 2018. For more info check out their website.

“I have always enjoyed racing of all kinds,” Gove said.
“What makes this so much fun is that here you are the team manager, mechanic and driver.”
