Pre-season training is heating up for the Ballito Dolphin’s rugby team and they have a new scrum-half to supply them with fast ball when the time comes.
Michael Neysschens is the new 28-year-old scrummie for the boys in blue, having moved from Empangeni to Sheffield two months ago.
Neysschens came over from the Zululand Rhinos, where he spent seven years playing for the club and is a sales consultant for Hytorc Africa.
After school at Durban High School he represented Natal at U13, U15, U18 junior club rugby level and played for the Zululand District side over the years, playing both scrummie and flank when the occasion called for it.
“My most memorable time was when I played for Harlequins in 2010, as I was playing under Charl McLeod. I learnt so much from him and was delighted to see him represent the Springboks later that year.”
Asked who his favourite rugby player was, Neysschens said it was the New Zealand scrummie, TJ Perenara.
“He’s a big, strong, half back and makes good, quick decisions – not to mention he can boot the ball a mile,” said Neysschens.
Neysschens told The Courier that one of the toughest games for him was always against Durban Collegians. “They have a massive pack of forwards and play very physical ‘in your face’ rugby.
“I enjoy rugby because you get the opportunity to work together in a team, pushing yourself and each other mentally and physically towards the same goal. Rugby builds strong friendships and allows you to have good fun on and off the field.”
