Hop in to break the Guiness World Record for the largest game of leapfrog

Help save the frogs and stand a chance to break a Guinness World Record

Rekindle those childhood memories and help one of the most threatened groups of animals on earth while attempting to break a world record on February 24 in Durban on Leap Day for Frogs.

The Endangered Wildlife Trust will be running their fourth national awareness day, Leap Day for Frogs which calls all South Africans to take a leap of action to celebrate and protect frogs.

These important croakers are disappearing all over the planet largely because of habitat destruction.

Apart from having tongues one third the length of their bodies, frogs are also famous for leaping across long distances – up to 20 times their own body length in a single leap!

The South African Cape River Frog holds the world record for “frog jumping” – the longest distance covered in three consecutive jumps – at 10.3 m. Not bad for a five centimetre frog.

This year, the organisation has entered the Guinness Book of World Records to break the record for the largest game of Leap Frog.

The record is currently held by New Zealand with 1,348 participants.

They are aiming for 1,500 participants and invite everyone to gather at the Durban Beachfront promenade near uShaka Marine World.

The leaping will begin at 10am on the Friday and participants will receive a sponsored educational pack (per school class) as well as a refreshment. Spot prizes will be also awarded.

For more information about the day and how you can help our hopping friends, send Dr Jeanne Tarrant a mail on jeannet@ewt.org.za or go to their website www.leapdayforfrogs.org.za.
