Wielding the willow for charity

This year's Ballito Lions Ricky Braham cricket tournament was yet another success

The sun was out, the heat was on and the beer was cold – the perfect combination for a succesful fundraising day at the annual Ballito Lions Ricky Braham cricket tournament at Umhlali Preparatory school last Sunday.

Dressed to match and armed with humour, the 12 teams taking part in the charity cricket day had a blast on the pitch, with team Cross Batters taking the title after meeting team Blap in the final.

Kyle Crichton said the day was everything they hoped for and in the true spirit of the late Ballito resident Ricky Braham, who became a quadriplegic after a violent hijacking.

He was an avid cricket fan and the cricket festival was first organised to raise funds for his treatment. Since his death the majority of the proceeds have gone to the QuadPara Association of South Africa in his honour as well as to other local charity organisations.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to the teams and supporters for making the day a huge success. The amazing atmosphere and the social cricket along with the supporting families made the day really special. It was also great to see lots of dads and lads teams,” said Crichton.

Financially, the day was particularly successful as a lot more funds were raised than the previous year.

“We are still counting, but it is safe to say that we have raised about R16,000.”
