Dolphins tackle Hillcrest this weekend

Meet the Dolphins' captain Kenny Graney

This weekend will see more Dolphins’ rugby action at Sugar Rush Park when the boys in blue go up against the Hillcrest Villagers.

The matches will take place on Saturday, April 22 with the second team playing at 2pm and the firsts at 3.30pm.

The Great Railroad Brewing Company Dolphins have just come from a close loss away to the Harlequins, who scored a penalty in the last move to take the game 15 -12.

Before we get too excited about this weekend though, it’s time to get to know the Dolphins’ captain a little better.

Kenny Graney is currently the Dolphins’ hooker – though he can play just about any position.

“Currently I am at hooker but I started last season at flyhalf and centre. I pretty much play wherever I am needed.”

Graney grew up in Johannesburg and went to school at King Edward VII School, before going on to Rand Afrikaans University. He has been living on the Dolphin Coast for the past four years.

Before joining The Great Railroad Brewing Company Dolphins, Graney played for the Pirates Rugby Club throughout his rugby career through U21 and up to 1st team.

During his time with the Pirates, Graney was named their 2002 player of the year and was later selected for the 2003 Craven Week team.

Asked who he expected to be their toughest opposition this season, Graney had an interesting response.

“Our toughest opposition this year is going to be ourselves.

“To be honest I feel all the teams this year are really strong and competitive. I am looking forward to every game this season as every game is going to give our team the opportunity to silence the nay-sayers and show the league what Dolphins Rugby is truly about.”

Graney said that for him, rugby is an outlet to vent all his negative feelings and thoughts.

“No other sport allows you to absolutely pummel your opposition and then you shake hands and have a beer together afterwards.”

He also said that while Dolphin training is tough, it pales in comparison to running around after his daughter, Hayley.

“Three-year-old’s have energy levels that border on the super-human and keeping up with her is tougher than any fitness session I have ever done.”
