Rugby is all about respect

Meet Dolphins’ loose head prop Blair “Zimbo” Haslam

“There is no other club that can compete with the brotherhood of the Dolphins.”

These are the words of Dolphins’ loose head prop Blair “Zimbo” Haslam, who has been with the team since 2015, and was in the junior U16-U18 side before that.

Born in Zimbabwe, the 22-year-old player is a bit of a utility forward, having played every position from one to eight in the line-up. Tipping the scales at 120kg while standing 1,78m tall, it is no surprise that he enjoys the tough stuff.

“My favourite player would have to be Eben Etzebeth I love the physicality he brings to the game and the way he never backs down to anyone.”

Haslam told The Courier that for training, he does explosive workouts in the gym and extra speed work and skills in his spare time.

“I had a hectic operation last year which ended up with me breaking off 40% of the bone in my shoulder, having my bicep reattached and being held together by two screws and a whole bunch of faith. But that’s rugby for you.”

While he would like to play for the Stormers one day, he has his eyes set on a Sharks jersey.

“Why you ask? Because I believe all things are possible when you put all your faith and trust in God.

I just thank the lord that I am able to still wear a rugby jersey after the operation last year.”

According to Haslam, Richard’s Bay would have been their toughest opposition but since they moved up a league he thinks Hillcrest are the team to beat.

“My most memorable game was against Crusaders at U18 level. We were down 17-0 at half time then went on to win the game 24-17, I have never seen so much heart in one game. While he enjoys all the physicality and heart that rugby has to offer, Haslam said the respect was what he loved most about the sport.

“I would have to say that I enjoy the respect that each player has for one another on and off the field, but mostly the respect they have for the game. That is what separates rugby from all the other sports out there – it is all about the brother next to you.”
