Answering the Comrades call

Dolphin Coast Striders had 56 finishers, with first man home Duane Dicks in 7:11:33 and first lady Pippa MacGregor in 8:57

Several hundred North Coast runners are resting their weary legs this week after completing the gruelling 86km Comrades Marathon.

Dolphin Coast Striders had 56 finishers, with first man home Duane Dicks in 7:11:33 and first lady Pippa MacGregor in 8:57.

Club chairman Barry Holland completed his 45th Comrades to become the record holder.

He and his wife, Debbie, who completed her 20th Comrades, hold the record for the most races run by a couple.

Verulam Falcolns are celebrating that the overall race winner, Bongomusa Mthembu, started his running career with their club. Mthembu was first man across the finish in a time of 5:35.

In the club’s 20th anniversary year, the club also boasted two silver medallists in Derick Gumede and Nkosinathi Jila.

The talented duo ran the 86.73 km in under 7 hours, Gumede finishing 61st position in 06:26, while Jila finished in 06:57.

Novice Benson Masuku had an inspired second half run to earn a Bill Rowan medal in a time of 08:51. He was followed by former silver medallist Ravin Singh (08:59).

Tongaat Panthers also had two silver medallists, Thembile Qhaniso and Lungani Mkhize, who completed the event in 7:20, with just a few seconds separating the pair.

Philani Walter Mkhize managed the best time for KwaDukuza Athletic Club in 8:26.

Ashton International College teacher Lizelle Faul tackled the Comrades to raise awareness for the Mshwati Primary and the ‘Partners for Possibility’ leadership programme.

Mshwati Primary is a rural school suffering a desperate lack of infrastructure and amenities and the Partners for Possibility’ leadership programme is an incredible leadership development
programme, aimed at empowering school principals to lead their schools and communities with confidence.

Even though Comrades is over, the initiatives still need your support.
