Braving the sand for a cause

Hosted by Beach Bums, the Bummer Beach Run was in support of PinkDrive, Riverside Trails and the Durban Athletics Club

Hundreds of athletes made the long trek along the Dolphin Coast’s beaches in Sunday’s Bummer Beach Run.

Hosted by Beach Bums, the event was in support of PinkDrive, Riverside Trails and the Durban Athletics Club (DAC).

It was the perfect day for a beach run, with early morning clouds keeping the winter sun at bay and a cool breeze to help the runners stay fresh.

Spectators at Beach Bums were treated to a cup of coffee and some even enjoyed a pizza as they waited for the athletes to arrive at the finish line.

“The majority of the proceeds from the beach runs will go towards PinkDrive to help them in their fight against breast cancer,” said Judy Millar, one of the organisers.

“The rest will go to Riverside Trails and DAC to help develop running talent in the province.”

Hardcore beach runners took on the 23km challenge from Tinley Manor all the way down to Beach Bums.

Athletes not only had to contend with the sand but also the trying rocky sections where they had to clamber up and down amidst the pounding spray.

Eric Ngubane won the 23km run in a remarkable time of 1:55:00, while Simonne Barrett was the first lady across the line in a time of 2:26:12.

For the slightly less adventurous runners there were also 15km and 7km beach runs starting at Beach Bums.

In the 15km Prince Chiposiwa and Emily Yeo were the first place man and women respectively, while the 7km was won by Kolbe Collett and Ilse de Villiers.
