Meet the Ballito Dolphins’ Etzebeth

Today will also see the boys in yellow and blue go up against the PMB Collegians at home at Sugar Rush Park - and the loser of this match will face being demoted to the lower league

Today (Saturday) will be the Great Railroad Brewing Company Dolphins‘ last chance to avoid the relegation hammer.

It’s been a tough season for the Dolphins and with just one game to go, they are currently occupying the relegation position.

This weekend will see the boys in yellow and blue go up against the PMB Collegians at home at Sugar Rush Park – and the loser of this match will face being demoted to the lower league.

For now though, it is time to get to know another of the Dolphins players.

Neels Herman is the Dolphins’ monster lock at 6ft 4′ and tipping the scales at 107kg and has taken the man of the match award three times this year.

Originally from Vandirbijlpark, Herman relocated to the coast earlier this year.

“I am the director for an International Business FSSB Plant, focusing on instrumentation electrical and automation. We have also recently launched a new business, manufacturing an agricultural crop cover called 4Crop.”

He went to HTS Carel de Wet and received his Instrumentation Qualification at Gajima AST through SAMANCOR, where he also received his red seal.

Herman told The Courier his favourite player was the Springbok’s Eben Etzebeth.

“He’s a young player but amazing, one of the best locks in the world. His game is inspirational.

“One of my most memorable moments on the field was during my first game for the Ballito Dolphins against the Durban Mets, I handed off five players from the kick off. It was a great feeling knowing that I still had what it took to play rugby after such a long break.”

Herman said it was the physicality and aggression of rugby that he loved.

Yet the giant of a man has a surprisingly humble side revealed in his pre-game ritual.

“Just before the game, I kneel on the field, and ask my Father God for a good game and the best tackle.”
