Meet Ballito Dolphins’ tight head prop, Brandon Jackson

Jackson, who is known as a family man, said there is nothing like playing in front of your children

Winning isn’t everything, sometimes a victory means giving your all and walking away with your head held high.

This is the lesson from The Great Railroad Brewing Company Dolphins‘ tight head prop, Brandon Jackson, who said that his most anticipated game this year was the second meeting against Hillcrest.

“The first game against Hillcrest in April was a nightmare, so the return leg against them last month was highly charged,” said Jackson, who is also sometimes called ‘Oom’ by his teammates.

“We still lost but every oke went out there and gave it everything, we were super amped and there was no way we were going to let them dominate us again. We may not have won but that day we were not the ones licking our wounds.

“We watched them lick theirs as we walked off painfully proud. Hillcrest finished undefeated but that would be one game they would not forget.”

The 39-year-old Jackson was originally a Durban boy before moving to Johannesburg and has been on the North Coast off and on for the past five years.

Jackson told The Courier that he had a deep and abiding love for rugby.

“When that whistle blows the whole world freezes and suddenly it is as though you are in a medieval battle where men are giving all they can and measuring their worth against each other.”

He said that he does not have much of a pre-game ritual, just thanking God for the ability and opportunity to play the game and getting a message from his wife.

“Without her last words of encouragement I would probably be extremely unsettled.”

Jackson, who is known as a family man, said there is nothing like playing in front of your children.

“The way my boys look at me when I play gives me pride – and it is awesome to know that they are proud of me in turn.”

The Ladysmith High School alumni said his favourite player was ex-Springbok Os du Randt and that he did not have a dream team to play for because it does not matter which jersey you pull on for the clash that lies ahead.

“We just want to do battle.”
