Last year for Dolphin’s utility wing
"There are plenty of things to love about rugby"
Born in the small town of Odendaalsrus in the Free State, Dolphin wing Paul Moll says this was his last year playing rugby.
Moll is a foreman for Triple Seven Projects, a construction company, and has lived in Ballito for the past nine years, during all of which he was a player for the Great Railroad Brewing Company Dolphins.
A bit of a utility back, Moll told The Courier that he had played every position in the backline over the years, but that wing was his preferred spot.
“I played for a few clubs before the Dolphins, but the one that stands out is the Harlequins in Pretoria.”
Moll said that his favourite rugby player of all time was the legendary Joost van der Westhuizen.
“He was arguably the best scrumhalf of all time. I loved his attacking style of rugby.”
During his time at Richard’s Bay High School, Moll was awarded district colours several times but said that his most memorable achievement was when he was selected for the 2003 Natal club side before heading off to study at the University of Pretoria. A memorable game was when he joined the Dolphins’ Old Boys, or ‘Madalas,’ to play against the SA Legends side earlier this year.
“It was definitely a highlight for me to play against guys who have played at the highest level. Even though they are ‘retired,’ it was probably one of the most physical games I have played! But what a honour.”
Moll said his dream team to play for was the Sharks, one of the most successful franchises with some of the biggest names playing for them.
“There are plenty of things to love about rugby,” said Moll.
“But what stands out is the is the friendships you develop on the rugby field and the camaraderie.”
