Broken bones won’t stop this Tongaat MMA fighter

Described as exhilarating and challenging, the full-contact combat sport is something that keeps many people on their toes

Mixed martial art (MMA), is a thrilling but dangerous sport, and despite major setbacks it is what keeps Tongaat MMA trainer and cage fighter Nesh Maharaj happy.

Nesh has been doing MMA for the past 18 years.

He described his journey as both exciting and challenging. While he is now relegated to training others after a horrific fighting injury, Nesh is determined to return to the cage himself one day.

In October 2014 at Ballito’s first cage fighting tournament at the Ballito Exhibition Centre, his leg was broken in his fight with opponant Vuyo Jala.

“I cannot explain the pain that I went through on that night. For a moment I thought there was a hole in the ring, only to realise that my leg was broken.”

Nesh had to have screws put in his leg as a result. No stranger to pain, he recalled his very first fight.

“That guy beat the hell out of me. When I arrived at the hospital, the nurses asked if I had been in a car accident.

“But that experience helped me to be strong and keep on working hard towards my goals,” said Maharaj.

Maharaj is now running a gym and is the founder of the Fighters Edge Fight Club based at Belverton Secondary School.

He trains beginners and seniors (even kids) in MMA, Wing Chun (a style of kung fu) and self defense and also offers personal training for people who want to get fit and lose weight.

“There is nothing that I enjoy more than doing martial arts, sharing my knowledge with the younger generation,” said Maharaj.

The gym is open every day in the afternoons.
