Bergstrom eyes MTB series win

She is currently sitting first on 534 points with two events remaining

The Dolphin Coast’s Natalie Bergstrom is on pace to take the 2017 Quattro ROAG MTB women’s title.

Bergstrom is currently sitting first on 534 points with two events remaining – the aQuelle Harburg Tour de Krantz on August 19 and Safire Baynesfield Classic on September 17.

To claim the title, Bergstrom needs to finish second or better in just one of the two remaining events to guarantee she will win, while her closest competitor, Christie-Leigh Hearder, would need to win both while Bergstrom is third or worse in both to steal the win away. An unlikely prospect.

Riders need to have finished at least six races to be in contention.

“Like every series we are all in it to win it,” said Bergstrom.

“It is a little tougher when you are racing against 18-year-olds but the competition has been great.”

Bergstrom has been taking part in the series since its inaugural event in 2012, which she won, and has managed a podium finish every year since then.

“It would be really great for me to get another win, I would be super stoked.”

In the men’s category KZN’s Stuart Marais is also virtually guaranteed to win, he just needs to finish one of the two remaining races (so he has a sixth finish) and be within the top 40 to be unbeatable.

Bergstrom is fairly confident that she will wrap up the series win this weekend but, as she says, this is racing and anything can happen.
