Nkobongo remembers Tony at sports day
Tony was a well-known taxi owner, the PRO for the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association and founder of the Nkobongo Madrid FC
While people around the country were celebrating Women’s Day last week, people gathered at the Nkobongo sports grounds for a day of sports in remembrance of Mdu Tony.
Tony was a well-known taxi owner, the PRO for the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association and founder of the Nkobongo Madrid FC.
During the formalities, speakers, including Ilembe SAFA president Hlelizwe Mhlongo, praised Tony’s wife Bongeka Tony for her bravery in taking over her late husband’s business as well as managing the football team.
“Judging by the way NKM was performing last season, it clearly shows that umama (Mrs Tony) is taking care of the boys. It is very unusual in the township that a widow will continue with her husband’s duties, particularly a soccer team. We salute her,” said Mhlongo.
Team manager Mhlaba Masinga complemented players and the coach Ajipha Mtamila for being strong after Tony was killed.
Tony was murdered in Nkobongo in July 2016.
His friend Pony Nhlumayo, who is also a taxi owner, described Tony as a man who had the love for his township and people in general.
“I am very glad that today he was remembered in this manner, he had done so much for the Nkobongo residents,” said Nhlumayo.
