Paddlers on tenterhooks for Gara Dolphin Coast Challenge

Rough conditions are not going to discourage surfskiers this weekend

The cold front whipping up the KZN coast will make this weekend’s Gara Dolphin Coast Challenge a tricky one for paddlers.

Huge surf and offshore swells are expected for the two day surfski event that is doubling as the SA Double Surfski Championships.

For the race’s defending champions, North Coast residents Hank McGregor and Lee Furby the conditions will not be foreign, however the crews that will be chasing them are going to have to make sure that they work for any advantage that they can get.

With this year’s race having the added incentive of being a national title race, the race is expecting to see some of the finest surfski paddlers lining up at the start.

It is expected that the big pressure will come from the experienced duo of Matt Bouman and Wade Krieger.

The pair are good friends and have developed a solid combination over the years, making them a tough nut to crack.

Registration is from 4pm – 6pm at Suncoast Pirates Surf Lifesaving Club this evening (Friday).

The Gara Dolphin Coast Challenge takes place on Saturday and Sunday, August 19 and 20.

The race is divided into two stretches, day one will see paddlers head from Durban up to Salt Rock and on day two they will then continue up the coast to Zinkwazi.
