Warriors invade Blythedale

Warriors came from far and wide to test themselves against the grueling obstacle courses

Blythedale Coastal Estate was a splendid battleground for over 3,000 ‘warriors’ and their 2,000 supporters as they gathered from around the country to tackle three tough obstacle courses set up around the stunning estate over the weekend.

The Toyota Warrior Race is South Africa’s largest obstacle course race series and offers athletes from different sporting prowess the opportunity to compete with one another, to live out their sense of adventure and to break barriers never thought possible.

It was the first public event hosted at Blythedale Estate’s recently-cleared Event Bowl and an impressive introduction to the estate for many first-time visitors.

Competitors conquer the ‘up and over’ obstacle as they head north on the estate’s 3,2km stretch of unspoiled beach.

“Having the beach, forest and wild grassland on the estate gave the course designers a lot to play with,” said event director Hennie Scheepers,

Competitors got to explore a variety of terrains.

While the Rookies stayed close to the beach on a 5km circuit with 15 obstacles, the Commando competitors ventured further inland into the forest over 10km and tackled 22 obstacles.

Black Ops competitors got to test their strength and endurance on the estate’s undulating topography as their 15km course ventured further inland with 30 obstacles and incredible views.

“It’s been an awesome opportunity for us to showcase the natural splendour of what the estate has to offer,” adds Blythedale Coastal Estate development director, Andrew Thompson – and after completing the Black Ops course, he should know.

All routes end at the Tower of Rage, from which competitors take a 6m leap into a purpose-made pool before scrambling out and over the finish line.
