Celebrating 30 years in Dolphins style

Dolphin Coast Striders running club celebrated their 30th anniversary with a sparkling evening of awards and dancing at the weekend.
Founded in 1987, Striders was the first road-running club on the North Coast, catering for runners from Ballito, Tongaat and Stanger.
The first time trial in Compensation Beach Rd attracted 40 runners, many of whom signed up there and then to form the club.
The first committee consisted of Richard Young (chairman), Joe White, Dave Stevenson, John Ferguson, Leon du Preez and Duncan McLagan and the then Dolphin Coast council assisted the club by donating land for the clubhouse in Dolphin Crescent.

The club’s annual half marathon was a very popular event on the provincial racing calendar for its scenic route and superior organisation, and was awarded ‘Best Organised Half-Marathon in KZN’ trophy on no fewer than five occasions.
The club also held the popular Indian Ocean Marathon for several years in conjunction with Ballito Rotary and Glenwood Harriers. This has been succeeded by the Deloittes Marathon, held annually from Ballito to Durban.
Current chairman Barry Holland paid tribute to the club’s founding members who had worked hard to ensure the club’s success, and assured them that Dolphin Striders still upheld the core values of providing a community venue for runners and walkers of all levels.
About 150 past and present club members gathered at Braeside for the annual club awards and presentations on the club history and achievements, followed by a party with a ’80s Luminous’ theme.
