Golf goodness for rhino security
The proceeds from the event was around R22 000 which will all be donated to the SANParks anti-poaching K9 unit.
Despite high winds, 52 players spent the day on the golf course in honour of rhinos at the SANParks Honorary Rangers (SHR) KwaZulu Natal Region 10th annual golf day held at Umhlali Country Club recently.
The proceeds from the event was around R22 000 which will all be donated to the SANParks anti-poaching K9 unit to meet needs for equipment and supplies, according to an approved wish list.
Umhlali Country Club’s Ian Catt said although the event was a lot of work, it was well worth the effort.
“We made some money for the SANParks K9 project and created awareness of SANParks, the plight of the rhinos, and the work of the K9’s to combat the poaching scourge,” said Catt.
SHR Lene Hansen informed guests about the difference the SANParks anti-poaching K9 Unit is making in the Kruger National Park.
“We are proud that 20% less rhino were poached in 2016 than the year before and the number of arrests of poachers has doubled. The more than 50 dogs now on duty in the Kruger National Park have been involved in 90% of those arrests, so the dogs really are a game changer, and KZN have supported this unit since 2014.
“The KZN Region’s recent successful awareness and fundraising campaign “Climb for K9″ generated R368,000 for the K9 Unit,” said Hansen.
