Footy lads fight it out in Durbs
Eighteen of the best U15 soccer players from the Dolphin Coast were selected to represent Footy and African Bank in the prestigious annual Metro Cup
You cannot always walk away with a win, but you can always enjoy sportsmanship and good fellowship.
Eighteen of the best U15 soccer players from the Dolphin Coast were selected to represent Footy and African Bank in the prestigious annual Metro Cup hosted by Amazulu FC, in Durban recently.
These players were from the Footy Development soccer program in Melville, Groutville, Nkobongo and Shakashead. African Bank sponsored four tournaments (one on each field) against these four communities in the program.
The players trained together twice a week for a month before the tournament to make sure they were ready to take all comers.
Footy’s Kyle Crichton expressed his thanks to the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation for transporting the players and Fiamma Grill for looking after the nutritional needs of the teams.
The Metro Cup stretched over three days with the ‘best of the best’ junior talent on show, including teams like Wits University, Amazulu Academy, KZN Academy, Fish Hoek and the Metro Elite team selected from Durban based clubs.
“Unfortunately we were unable to bring home the trophy – congratulations to Fish Hoek for winning – however, it was an unbelievable experience for the players to be exposed to much better facilities than they are use to and to play against the best,” said Crichton.
“The players enjoyed every minute of the tournament and four were earmarked for trials at the end of 2017. Valuable lessons were learnt from this tournament and we cannot wait to return stronger in 2018.”
The U15 Footy Development squad is playing under the Ballito Football Club banner in the Tongaat League and is currently lying 2nd.
