La Piazza crowned soccer ‘World Champs’
The 'countries' represented in the tournament were: Italy (La Piazza), Mozambique (Mo-Zam-Bik), Mauritius (Fiamma/Concha), South Africa (Shakers), Greece (Zara's) and Argentina (Hops).
It was guns-blazing soccer last week when players from six restaurants in Ballito went toe to toe for the Footy Restaurant World Cup.
In the end it was the team from La Piazza who were crowned ‘World Champions,’ after a final that saw eight goals in standard time and a sudden death penalty shootout.
The teams arrived with vocal supporters who never stopped cheering their favourites on and with the sun out, the field swept and the music playing, the tournament was enjoyed by all players and spectators with great sportsmanship shown between teams.
The ‘countries’ represented in the tournament were: Italy (La Piazza), Mozambique (Mo-Zam-Bik), Mauritius (Fiamma/Concha), South Africa (Shakers), Greece (Zara’s) and Argentina (Hops).
The round robin format allowed for each team to play five games, ensuring the cream would rise to the top and that in the end the top four teams would duke it out in the semi-finals.
The newcomers, Argentina (Hops) were the surprise team in the tournament ending second in the overall log table but unfortunately lost their semi-final against Mauritius (Fiamma/Concha).
The final could not have been more exciting as Italy and Mauritius traded goals on either side and sent their respective supporters into a frenzy. The game was locked at 4-4 at the end of full time which meant a dreaded penalty shoot-out would decide the eventual winners.
To add to an already tense moment, both teams scored two out of their three penalties, sending them into a sudden death shootout scenario. Italy scored and watched while Mauritius missed and forfeited the trophy and the bragging rights.
