Young fishing fundi

Dynamite comes in small packages as proved by 13-year-old Keano van der Merwe, who was recently named the junior champion fisherman of 2017 at Westbrook Ski Boast Club.
Van der Merwe told the Courier he had been fishing since he was four years old.
“My first deep-sea trip was a surf launch with my dad.”
The intrepid young fisherman also managed to bag the junior species award at the recent fishing competition at Salmon Bay.

His enviable list of species caught already includes a marlin, but like all fisherman he is already looking for the next big adventure. “My dream catch would be an Amber Jack”, said the Ashton College pupil, who goes into grade 7 this year.
Van der Merwe also plays rugby, cricket hockey and golf.
“I definitely prefer salt water fishing. The fish are bigger, you get a better fight and I love the ocean!”
