North Coast fighting machine Dzemil Muric demolished all opposition at Sunday’s Karate South Africa (KSA) Ethekwini regional karate championships hosted at the Tongaat town hall.
The Aston international college grade 12 pupil was in devastating form and was crowned grand champion in the U21 category after winning double gold medals in both forms of fighting (kata and kumite).
Muric, a seasoned Protea athlete, is firmly on track to win the forthcoming KZN karate championships and the subsequent KSA nationals that will be hosted in early March in Gauteng.
“I am determined to achieve my Protea colours once again this year and I will be making my best effort with the assistance of Protea coach Brando Pillay Shihan to win the World Karate Federation world title, which will enable me to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020,” said Muric.
Protea head coach Shihan, who mentors and guides Muric in his karate career, expressed his optimism with regards to his protégé’s chances of winning a world title.
“Dzemil has the potential to go all the way to the Olympics, provided he stays focused,” said the seasoned coach.
KSA president Sonny Pillay Hanshi, who delivered the keynote address at the regional championships, was full of praise for the top ranked Shotokan Karate International South Africa fighter.
“I was impressed with the display of superb fighting skills by the local karatekas, however I have to admit that throughout the championships Dzemil was a cut above the rest and his outstanding performance certainly augurs well for his chances of soon winning a world title ” said Hanshi.
The KSA president also reminded the public that only members affiliated to KSA structures may qualify for the Olympics on merit, provided they meet the Olympic qualification criteria. Parents need to contact KSA before enrolling their children in karate classes. For all karate inquiries, call KSA at 082 557 7784 or email president@karate-sa.org.
