Ballito goal shooter (51) at the top of her game
Competition is fierce for places within the KZN over 35 ladies netball team.
Ballito’s Elaine Herman was blown away when – after taking part in the KZN netball trials just for the heck of it – she was selected to be part of the KZN over 35 ladies netball team.
The 51-year-old has lived in Ballito for the past 11 years and originally hails from Boksberg. She owns her own business, “Elaine’s Cleaning Services” that keeps many of the holiday houses spic and span.
“I never actually thought I would make it, I just went to the trials for the experience,” Herman told the Courier.
She is the mother of three, a son (31), a daughter (23) and – much to everyone’s surprise, the ‘laat lammetjie’ Kayton, who is only three.
Herman took part in the trials late last year in the KZN North Arena, where she said competition was tough.
“There were lots of ladies there all playing their hearts out, so I was shocked and surprised when I got the call.”
She told the Courier she had been an avid netball player throughout her life and had even played for the Telkom Club in Johannesburg in her day. She frequently supports the SA netball team and said she also enjoys watching athletics.
In a nutshell, Herman is a net specialist, playing either goal shooter or goal keeper, though she said she prefers to shoot.
“I love everything about netball. It is a thinking woman’s game but it also winds you down and has a great social side.
Herman will be joining the KZN team when they travel to Rustenberg from April 28 – May 2 for the 2018 Inter Provincial Tournament.
“I am so excited, this is the opportunity of a lifetime for me!”
