Calling all hockey players!

This year for the first time, Umhlali Impis Junior section will be affiliated with Madsen Coaching.

There is a long tradition of club hockey in KZN, and one of the oldest is the Umhlali Impis, who are on the lookout for young talent.

“Club hockey provides hockey players of both genders and of all ages with the opportunity to practice on Astro and to partake in tournaments and festivals,” said Impi Rob Pissarra.

“It can be enjoyed purely on a social level or it can be taken to a very competitive level. We are not specifically affiliated to any school and pupils from all local schools are encouraged to join the club.”

At the moment the Umhlali Impis field two senior men’s sides playing in the KZN Durban league.

In the 2017 season, the first team finished 3rd in the 2nd Division, while the second side finished fifth in the third division. The aim is to try to enter a ladies’ team in the league for the first time and get a men’s side into the first league.

This year for the first time, Umhlali Impis Junior section will be affiliated with Madsen Coaching.

This means that the junior and youth players will get professional coaching. The skills learnt during club hockey can be directly translated to school hockey.

Practices take place on Crawford North Coast’s Astro. Registration and first practice for the U13’s will take place on Wednesday, February 21.

The early start date is to allow for some sessions before Ilembe and KZN trials.

  • Seniors will start mid-March and juniors (children born from 2007 to 2010) will start on April 13.
  • Seniors will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8pm, U13’s on Wednesdays from 6-7pm (and they will be welcome to join Thursday’s senior sessions) and juniors on Fridays from 5-6pm.

“We have arranged that food will be available to purchase before or after practice from Loret’s Kitchen, which we hope will create a nice social vibe,” said Pissarra.
