Eagle’s Cry wedding and function venue in Tongaat was roaring with fun and laughter at the recent Dolphin Coast Paddlers Club AGM.
The light-hearted evening saw the founder of the club, Calvin Harris step down as chairman as he handed over the head paddle to Doug Orchison.
Orchison said Harris was the chairman for two years and had done an amazing job.
“I am excited for the year ahead and look forward to working with the committee and the members in moving the club forward from where Calvin left off,” said Orchison who has been entrusted with the new role despite having won the Wrecker award for wrecking the most boats.
Other awards included: Paddler of the Year “The Tank” award – Matt Gunning; Female Paddler of the Year – Kirsty Allen; First Dolphin Coast Paddlers boat home for Dusi – Chris and Kirsty Allen; Surfski Paddler of the Year – Matt Gunning; Novice of the Year – Shelley Orchison and Chairman’s Bowl – Kobus Brummer.

On the lighter side Calvin Harris and Brian Rapson won the Bailer award and Brad Allen took home the Navigation award.

“A huge thank you to Tongaat Hulett for giving us access and allowing us to paddle on this amazing dam. We are truly grateful to them for this because without them we would not have such a great venue to call home.”

The club will be working on the following items this year: hyacinth in the dam; development of local paddlers from the Ilembe district; hosting races on the paddling calendar and focusing on safety by doing flat-water proficiency programmes for new paddlers and a Swift Water Course for more advanced paddlers.
Furthermore, they will have their time trials on Dice Night every Tuesday with a special “Hunt Properties Dice Night” on the first Tuesday of the month where Hunt Properties sponsor boerie rolls and an ice-cold beer or water to all who take part in the dice.
For more information about how you can join the club or the dice nights, contact Doug Orchison at 083 279 3688 or send a mail to dolphincoastpaddlers@gmail.com.
