Tongaat fight-fest at Karate SA Protea’s Open and Elite championships
Hundreds jam-packed the Tongaat Sports Centre last Friday for the Karate SA Protea's Open and Elite championships.
The action packed tournament kept the huge crowd of spectators on the edge of their seats throughout the day. KZN’S multiple national karate champion Riasha Singh blew away all opposition in the female senior category to once again be crowned ladies’ black belt champion with Gauteng’s Morgan Moss dominating the senior men’s category to win gold.
North Coast karateka Dzemil Muric lost a thrilling final to the Western Cape’s Liam Damon to settle for a silver medal in the U21 category while seasoned provincial fighter Ash Ramnarain from Shakaskraal also made a podium finish in the U21 ladies contest.
Tongaat’s Reddy twins – Kira and Tahira – both made podium finishes in the cadet division. The president of Karate SA, Sonny Pillay Hanshi expressed his delight at the high standard of tournament techniques that were on display throughout the weekend’s event.
“It is noteworthy that the standard of karate exhibited by our Protea fighters in particular is improving with every event,” he said.
Tournament director Leo Cuitto was also very impressed with the huge turnout of spectators who encouraged the fighters.
“Spectators are very important in ensuring good spirit and success of a karate event such as our elite championships.”
Meanwhile, the technical head for Karate SA, Brando Shihan left for the World Karate Federation Olympic qualifiers in Eastern Europe (Croatia).
“I am extremely pleased with the outstanding performance of our athletes particularly the youth especially given that several of them are leaving for the WKF World Youth, Cup in top form, which bodes well for their chances of qualifying for the Olympics in the trials this coming week end in Croatia,” said Shihan.
