Tongaat’s defending volleyball champs take aim

The country’s premier volleyball tournament is set to be a hit next weekend with a Tongaat team taking the floor as defending champions.

The National Master’s Volleyball tournament is set to take centre stage from August 9-11 in UKZN’s Westville Sports Centre, where the Liberte Tongaat men’s team will attempt to hold on to their crown from last year.

This will be a tough ask as the tournament has attracted a record number of teams this year.

In a fitting celebration of Women’s Day, the tournament will feature 16 female teams, twice the number that entered in 2017.

“The role of women in our society cannot be understated and we are delighted by the interest from female teams,” said eThekwini Volleyball president Marcellino Nyar.

“Women have made an amazing contribution to the growth of the sport all over the world. We are looking forward to watching them dazzle on the court.”

The men’s draw will feature 32 sides from around the country, increasing by a third over last year’s entrants.

The extended format of the tournament means that fans can expect an even greater competitive edge while at the same time enjoy the camaraderie and sense of family that the tournament continues to deliver year in, year out.

“It’s not just the competitiveness of the game, but the life-long friendships that keep the masters players coming back,” Nyar said.

Last year’s champions, Liberate and KAD Beasts, in the men’s and females formats respectively, will both be back in a bid to defend their titles.

The tournament is part of the Legends Volleyball Series, a KZN based association which focuses on Masters volleyball.
