Running for Ndwedwe chainsaw victim

Earlier this year Ndwedwe cyclist Mhlengi Gwala was on an early morning ride when he was attacked by a group of men with a chainsaw.

Miraculously he escaped the brutal attack where they literally attempted to cut off his legs, managed to find help and get to a hospital, but his road to recovery is still long.

Inspired to help by his horrific story, Ward Events supported by Riverside Trail and Backabuddy have included a fund raising element in the up and coming Sun Sibaya King Shaka Trail Run, being held on August 26.

Trail runners and walkers are urged to support this event to assist Mhlengi to return to his full potential. Already he is swimming and cycling.

“He has overcome a lot in his life to be where he is today,” said EADP director Dennis Jackson, speaking after the attack.

The event offers two options.

At 6.30am trail runners and walkers can enjoy a scenic 10km trail taking in the banks of the Umdloti river, then at 6.40am a 5km trail will follow part of the 10km route. Both events start and finish at the Sibaya Casino.

Entries can be done through ROAG.co.za and pre entries close on August 22.

Late entries will be taken on August 22 from 5.30am onward.
