Locals carve it up at SA champs

The Dolphin Coast’s senior surfers headed down to East London earlier this month for the SA Open and Master Champs.

This was the second year that the Ilembe Surf Riders Association has sent an Open and Masters team to compete against seven other districts.

The team jumped in their bus – generously sponsored by Midbay Motors – for a few days of warm up in the Transkei, before arriving to surf conditions for the week that were again excellent at times and also very challenging with the venue having to be moved on a few days due to large swells.

The individual performances were much improved from last year where they only accumulated 21,640 points and 7th place. This year 30,960 points and 6th place overall was a fantastic result for the district.

One of the highlights was Allan Johns reaching the podium in his category.

Ilembe finished 6th overall in eight districts with locals achieving the following results in the President’s Cup:

• Over 35’s: Alan Johns (2nd) and Johno Trenor (15th);
• over 40’s: Dave Pietersen (5th) and Sean von Oetingen (13th);
• over 50’s: Steve Quinn (7th) and Brian Dougherty (10th);
• and over 60’s: Barry Campbell (4th).

For the Open Men’s Championship Cup, Ilembe’s surfers achieved the following results:

Michael Monk 5th and Liam de Villiers both raked in 5th, Richard Kidd came 7th and Janek Ferrandi 17th, while Steve Theunissen and Justin Sykes finished 30th in their events.

In the Women’s Open Danica Stockigt finished 10th overall.
