Time to run rampant through Ballito

Diarise the date and get your speedy shoes on – it is time to run rampant on the streets of Ballito for the 2018 Speedster.

The Speedster is the largest unofficial race on the North Coast, run over the 4km time trial route which is fairly challenging and undulating, with a slight hill to the finish line.

The main sponsors are The North Coast Courier and Mo-Zam-Bik restaurant, who provide competitors with a meal of peri peri chicken and chips at prize giving, and runners/walkers receive quality running shirts.

Other sponsors include Re/Max Ballito, Delia Jay attorneys, Dischem, Liquor City and artist Steve van der Schyff who has donated a painting for auction,

“When I started the Speedster 12 years ago, I never thought it would get this big,” said organiser Bev Livingstone, who works tirelessly to get the 4 km Speedster going year after year for the town’s running enthusiasts.

“The impact on the local community has been phenomenal and the support of local business has been heart warming.”

In previous years they had top athletes from all over the country as well as local Jason Spong (ranked 7th in the world in his field), who shattered the course record in an incredible time of 11:23.

“Our biggest prize to date was a R10 000 scooter which was won by Petros Zweni. We sponsor eight development runners who receive their entry and their meals and drinks as well as their T-shirts with no payment expected.

“Again this year we will raise funds for Sables creatures (those who cannot speak for themselves),” said Bev.

The race, which will be held on Wednesday, September 26, will begin at 5.30pm.
