Fast, furious football at annual Metro Cup
The boys from Ballito sent a clear message to the other clubs by flying undefeated through their group matches.
The Footy and Ballito Football Clubs joined forces to tackle this year’s annual Metro Cup in Durban.
The boys from Ballito sent a clear message to the other clubs by flying undefeated through their group matches, winning 4-2 against All Stars, 4-1 against Mthuba Academy, 5-0 against Metro Stars and finally 2-1 against Metro Elite.
“As we say goodbye to another awesome Metro Cup tournament and start looking forward to the 2019 addition, we can hold our heads up high knowing that we played our hearts out and left everything we had out on the field,” said Footy’s Kyle Crichton.
After dominating the group stages it was time to move on to the knock-out rounds.

In the semi-final’s Ballito’s footballers came up against a very different and freshly determined Metro Stars team that pushed them hard until the end.
“We again proved to have too much in the tank for them and scored the winning goal in the last three minutes of the game to take the win (4-3) and progress into our first ever Metro Cup final.”
Their opponents in the final, Metro Elite, had just returned from a winning tournament in Swaziland where they beat the Swaziland National U15 team in the final.
The Metro Cup final was an intense battle with both teams having chances to score. It was Metro Elite that took their chances though and scored in the first half.
“Although our boys threw everything they had at the Metro Elite side, it was not meant to be, and we lost the final 1-0.”
The team was devastated at the loss but handled it like true gentlemen, congratulating their opponents on the win and then reflecting on what could have been. They were complimented throughout the tournament by parents and coaches on the way in which they played the beautiful game, as well as the good sportsmanship shown towards their opponents.
“The boys are heartbroken for not winning the tournament but the whole experience will make them better players for the future. We will be ready to lift that trophy in 2019 – watch this space!”
