606km, two days, one purpose for young Ballito cyclist

A brave Ballito high school pupil with a big heart is warming up to take on SA’s toughest two-day road ride for a good cause starting on December 2.

Chloe Bateson was inspired to take on the grueling 606 kilometer Ride for MRP Foundation cycle from Johannesburg to Durban after her dad, Andrew, took part last year.

“When the opportunity arose to ride it this year, I said yes! It will definitely be an experience to remember and it would be great to support the campaign,” said Chloe, who has clinched many a medal on her road and mountain bikes in competitions both at home and abroad.

The Curro Mount Richmore grade nine pupil will be riding for about 24 hours over the two days cycling from 4.30am till 6pm covering 346 kilometers on day one.

Day two starts even earlier at 4am covering 261 kilometers to the finish mark in Durban by 4.30pm.

Last year’s edition saw the largest peloton to date made up of 50 cyclists from diverse backgrounds including juniors, ladies, local athletes and Springbok rugby legends John Smit, Wayne Fyvie and Jeremy Thomson.

The foundation has raised over two million Rand since the inaugural ride in 2010 which goes towards empowering the youth in lowincome communities through education and skills development.

Its mission is to help these youth as they journey from school into a career, allowing them to become part of the solution to end poverty and inequality.
