Bronze at Commonwealth for Shakaskraal karate sensation

North Coast Karate South Africa (KSA) tournament karate superstar Aishwaria Ramnarian placed in the top three at
the recent Commonwealth Karate  Championships 2018.

The Ladies Protea team member who hails from Shakaskraal achieved a bronze  medal in the under 21 division.

She secured her medal amidst tough competition from top class tournament fighters of the 16 Commonwealth nations taking  part in the tournament at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban.

“While I aimed for  a gold medal I am satisfied with my bronze medal achievement,especially given the exceptionally high standard on display throughout the championships,” said the secondmyear varsity student.

“I will continue to aim high as I focus on qualifying for the Olympics going forward.”

Technical convener of KSA Brando Pillay who headed up the technical affairs of the event was delighted at his prodigy’s performance.

“Aishwaria is destined to become a world  champion provided she stays focused on her karate practice, given her immense talent and her outstanding performance.”

KZN Karate president Ben Mare was full of praise for the event organisers headed up by Shani Lakram, Berry Reddy, Leo Ciutto and Brando Pillay.

“Given the limited resources and with no sponsorship whatsoever from local government, they certainly pulled off a miracle in ensuring an incident-free, smooth running Commonwealth karate championships.”

SA karate’s Sonny Pillay and chief executive of the championships, was impressed by the huge turnout of fighters from abroad and throughout the country.

The turnout of 16 Commonwealth countries and 700 athletes – a record for KZN.
