Ballito rider top in the arena at SA Youth Championships

Ballito is home to the new SA Junior Novice Champs Dressage winner and her horse after a stunning performance at the SA Youth Championships at Shongweni Club recently.

Sonique Mouton and her horse Kerwood Paradigm were one of four riders selected from KZN to take part in the championships and did not disappoint: a second in the qualifier; second in freestyle; second in the team event and gold for the KZN team.

Sonique won the championship class.

The 15-year-old Ballito resident was the only rider who was constantly placed on all three days and with her winning the championship class she also was awarded the SA Junior Novice Victor Ludorum.

The grade ten Curro Mount Richmore pupil said she was really happy about the achievement, as her and Kerwood Paradigm are still quite new at the dressage game.

“I am very proud of him. He has come a long way and considering that we have only been working on dressage for a year compared to some of the other competitors who have been practicing for seven years plus, he has done extremely well,” said Sonique, who rides at Galloping Winds under coach Leanne Cutting.

She said they enjoy dressage because it is a challenge for both of them.

“We like the discipline and skills needed in dressage. I look forward to learning a lot more with him.”

When Sonique is not riding, she enjoys reading and going to the gym.
