Young Ballito cyclists go ‘ROAG’ in Wartburg
The Century 21 Elite Mountain Bike team recently competed in the Illovo Wartburg MTB Classic & Trail Run.
Age is just a number, and boy does that ring true for Ballito’s Century 21 Elite Mountain Bike team.
The young, eager cyclists recently did their hometown proud after taking part in the first race of the 2019 Quattro ROAG Series, the Illovo Wartburg MTB Classic & Trail Run, taking some top positions and setting the benchmark for the long, busy and exciting year of cycling ahead.
The team, which consists of top riders from the Sugar Rats Cycling Academy and ranging from eight to 14, rode their hearts out against some top cyclists in their new kit sponsored by Century 21 Ballito.
The Quattro ROAG Series consists of 10 races which the elite team plans on taking part in this year.
In the 25km race, Madison Bateson (nipper) took first place in her age category, followed by Troy Cole (nipper) in 3rd, Christopher Mason (nipper) in 4th, Elliott Metcalf (sprog) in 5th and Joshua Metcalf (sub junior) in 7th.
In the 45km race, Connor Steytler took 12th place in his age category.
Head coach Scott Pearmain said his team outdid their expectations.
“We were gobsmacked! Five riders made it into the top 10 while Connor (14) who tackled the mammoth 45km race came in at 12th place – an outstanding achievement.
“Because this race is part of the Quattro ROAG Series, everyone comes out to play and Wartburg has always been a very popular event, with about 350 riders in the 25km and the same in the 45km race – ranging from kids to grandmasters.”
