Ballito Dolphins ready to rumble as rugby season kicks off

Following a tough few weeks of pre-season training, the Ballito Dolphins Rugby Club have officially kicked things off with their first event for the season.

This past weekend saw the Dolphins head up north to Eshowe for the Bozas Cup, with a squad of nearly 50 senior players sporting much excitement and expectation.

“This competition is a great opportunity for the coaches to try various combinations and for the players to see just how effective their pre-season campaign has been,” said vice chairman Mark Svenningsen.

“Four round-robin games for both teams unfortunately did not see either team progress to the finals, but some outstanding individual performances from some of our new boys will undoubtedly have the coach’s attention and some of our regulars a bit worried.”

The club then shifted its focus to the corporate breakfast with guest speaker Gary Teichmann on Tuesday at the Simbithi Country Club, in an effort to spread the word about their newly launched corporate membership.

Teichmann is a retired South African rugby union player and captained the Springboks between 1995 and 1999.

The main aim of the corporate membership is to take sport to all communities, and businesses and members of the community are called to get on board.

“This is really to expose rugby to our previously disadvantaged and traditionally non-rugby playing communities,” said Svenningsen.

This coming Saturday sees the visit of the SA Legends and another pre-season warm up for the seniors versus Varsity College at Sugar Rush Park.

Festivities will start at 1pm with the kids coaching clinic run by the Legends followed by a curtain raiser against Varsity College. Finally the much anticipated Legends vs Madalas game will kick off at 3.30pm. After the game there will be big screen TV’s to watch the Sharks take on the Bulls, followed by live music by the Tequila Twins.

Food for the entire day will be provided by Grandstand and Mozambik.
