“I tried playing other sports and never enjoyed them. Mixed martial arts gave me a totally new feeling and I knew I was doing something good for myself.
“The sport is teaching me discipline and I am very confident and determined to do well,” he said.
Coulson said having a good training team and coaches were vital and he honoured his own coaches, Rodney van der Vlugt and Amanda Lino, for their support.
Lino said Coulson had natural talent and was always eager to learn, two ingredients that would ensure his success.

“I have no doubt that he will make it to the national team and if he keeps the passion and dedication that he currently has, he will go far with his sporting career. He is very committed and a very fast learner,” said Lino.
The grade 10 pupil at The Education Studio trains every afternoon, six days a week.
He said besides being a martial arts fighter, he hoped to study to become a physiotherapist.
“I think it works well with the sport that I enjoy and it will help me understand the health side of fitness.”
