Salt Rock’s Twiggy wins third Big Wave Tour World Championship
The 45-year-old has had a long and challenging journey thus far.
Grant “Twiggy” Baker – Salt Rock’s very own – has won yet another world title, his third Big Wave Tour (BWT) World Championship in six years. He beat out last year’s winner Billy Kemper to complete his treble in style.
The 45-year-old has had a long and challenging journey thus far, one that took him to the Northern Hemisphere and away from home for six whole months.
Twiggy took to social media to share with his peers, supporters, friends and extended family what the past few months have entailed for him.
“Who would have bet on a 40-year-old South African from Durban, recently dropped by their long term sponsor and riddled with injury to come back and win three World Big Wave Titles in six years, (while) being chased by a pack of young, hungry, incredibly talented surfers?” posted Twiggy on Instagram on Sunday.
He thanked his entire team for their continued support. They help him get through each year’s gruelling competitive season “physically, mentally, spiritually and financially”.
Twiggy sincerely acknowledged and appreciated that his success was a result of a strong collective of people who propped him up.
He also thanked his overseas ohana (meaning ‘family’ in Hawaiian) for creating a home away from home for him when he was travelling.
“My utmost gratitude goes to my family Kate and Billi for their unwavering love and support for my dream,” said Baker.
It goes without saying that Twiggy will be overjoyed to be back home, where he plans to spend a lot of quality time with his wife and three-year old daughter.
“To those young guys who pushed me so hard this year, you had better be ready because I’m coming back fitter, stronger and mentally hungrier next season,” he warned.
