North Coast golfers tackle three golf courses in one day

When they told people they were going to cover three golf courses and 54 holes in one day, everyone thought they were crazy – but they did it.

After 11 hours on the greens, Simbithi Country Club golf pro Ryan Schierhout and Zimbali resident Grant Harris finally had their well-deserved cold beer when they completed the three-course challenge in one day.

The duo teed off at Zimbali Country Club, worked through a hot Umhlali Country Club course and reached the final hole on a Simbithi Country Club course.

“It was a hot, long day. We started at 6.30am and finished at 5.30pm. By the time we finished at Umhlali, we started to lose our sense of humour and seriously considered sitting down at the bar and calling it quits,” said Harris.

“We went through so many emotions in one day – at times one of us wanted to kick the other off the golf cart, while the other wanted to throw the driver on the ground and walk away.”

Still they pulled through and finished every hole – an achievement the country clubs could not believe.

“Everyone thought we were crazy and no one offered to do this challenge with us. We got many raised eyebrows! But we wanted to try and as far as we know, no one else has done three courses in one day.”

While they were sceptical, all the clubs came on board and supported their “crazy” idea said Schierhout.

“We were very lucky and would like to thank Simbithi, Zimbali and Umhlali for their support. Without their input and help to co-ordinate the day by making sure the courses were ready for us to race through, we would not have been able to do this,” said Schierhout.

The two golf fanatics already have a new goal in mind – four courses in one day.

“Knowing that we managed these three courses, we would like to try add Prince’s Grant to the mix. We are surrounded by such amazing golf courses and we just want to make the most of it.”
