Helmets, beer, live music and an adrenaline rush at the Classic

Beautiful, clear, hot weather greeted the riders as big and small geared up for the annual Holla Trails Sugar Rush Classic Festival powered by Zululami last weekend.

The main 45 kilometre race saw competitive cycling right up to the finish line when Andrew Hill edged Travis Stedman for first place finishing just a second ahead.

Hill, who was the runner-up last year, completed the route in a time of 1:47:51.

Last year’s winner Tyronne White completed the podium.

On the woman’s side Christie-Leigh Hearder, who came second in last year’s women’s race, finished first in her category. Rouxda Grobler placed second, with Chloe Bateson third.

The 19 kilometre race saw Sean Yelland claim first prize while Jodi Mackinnon won the women’s race.

Those who enjoy a more leisurely cycle took part in the five kilometre MTB family ride.

Trail runners also had a fantastic time and could choose between two races: 16 kilometres which was won by Sylvester Maindi in 59 minutes and 36 seconds and the eight kilometre race won by Hlelani Radebe in 30 minutes 38 seconds.

This year’s event also celebrated Holla Trails’ tenth anniversary and saw 863 participants take part over the weekend, making it the biggest sporting event held at Sugar Rush Park.

All participants could donate towards Gears 4 Ears to raise money for candidates who need cochlear implants.
