Reaching out in Nkobongo – one boy at a time

Due to the increasing rates of teenage pregnancy, drug use and child-headed homes in Nkobongo, a group of students have taken up an initiative to educate children on how to cope with difficult situations at home.

Targeting boys between the age of 11 and 15, they launched a campaign called “It Takes A Village…” on Saturday at the Nkobongo Sport Grounds.

The day started off with different sport codes and games before the children were told how the campaign could help them and encouraged to make use of it.

“We will be doing weekly workshops at the Nkobongo Community Hall on Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

“We will start with helping them with school work and then talk about any challenges that they might be facing. We want to be more like their friends, who they will be able to talk freely without the fear of being judged,” said Nasiphi Nqambayi.

Nqambayi said they are a group of ten generic management students trained by a company called Media Works at the Community Hall and the campaign is part of their curriculum. However, they planning to continue even after their course.

“We are using sport because it’s the language that most boys in the township understand. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us and special thanks to our sponsors,” said Nqambayi.
