Ballito cyclists shine at Sappi Karkloof Classic

Local cyclists came home with impressive results after taking part in the Sappi Karkloof Classic held in Howick this past weekend.

While the 60km race was won by Australian Cameron Wright in 2:39:53, Ballito resident, Tyronne White came 5th overall in 2:40:45.

Ballito’s Rouxda Grobler came 2nd in the women’s division with 3:34:29 on the clock, with 16 year old local Chloe Bateson winning the 40 km race in 2:10:49 and Justin Swanepoel coming third overall in the 20 km.

White and Bateson described the race as very challenging but enjoyable and both said they are eager to take part next year.

“I have done the race six times but this was the most challenging race in KZN,” said White.

Bateson said it was an amazing experience yet very challenging for her to take on the 40 km race.

“The environment was great and I will definitely take part next time. It was tough but it was lots of fun,” said Bateson.

Local junior participants also dominated in the 20km race, with the Dolphin Coast Century 21 Elite Mountain Bike Team bringing home some outstanding results.

Errin Mackridge came in at 1st Sprog Girl, Madison Bateson – 1st Nipper Girl, Amber Cole – 3rd Sub Junior Girl, Elliott Metcalf – 3rd Sprog Boys, Troy Cole – 3rd Nipper Boys, Christopher Mason – 4th Nipper Boys and Josh Metcalf – 8th Sub-Junior Boys.

Fourteen-year-old Connor Steytler tackled the 60km race and took 6th in the Youth Men division.
