Dolphin Coast brothers skating the ice on fire
The Ashton International College pupils recently made the SA Ice Hockey team and hope to help grow the sport that they are passionate about.
Two Dolphin Coast brothers are putting the spotlight on an icy game that is known for speed and intensity.
Born in SA but raised in Canada, Luca and Clayton Meyer returned to their birthplace with their family two and half years ago and live on a farm in Upper Tongaat.
The Ashton International College pupils recently made the SA Ice Hockey team and hope to help grow the sport that they are passionate about.
“In Canada, ice hockey is like a religion. It is amazing to see people playing here and to see the sport grow, because it takes so much dedication and it is expensive to play in Durban,” said 17-year-old Luca.
He plays for the U18 and U20 team and has competed overseas, playing in Iceland for the U20 SA team recently where he was awarded Player of the Match.
“I play centre which means you have to be fast and always be where the puck is. I love the whole vibe of the game. Seeing how everyone works together is great.”
When he is not training on the ice, the off ice training keeps him busy which includes 100m sprint practice to keep him speedy coupled with a strict high protein diet.
“I would like to play professionally after school. I travel a lot for training and exposure to games and spent some time with a host family in Cape Town recently to play over there. It is a big commitment, but I love it,” said Luca who also plays every sport offered at Ashton.
His brother, Clayton is a matric pupil and makes Luca’s life difficult on the ice.
“I enjoy the physical aspect of ice hockey. It is great to be able to save or protect or stop the goals from coming in and it gives me a different sense of purpose. My brother’s purpose is to score a goal and mine is to stop that from happening,” said Clayton who has also found his passion for rugby in South Africa.
