Gear up for the Luthuli Legacy Walk and Fun Run

In honour of the late Chief Albert Luthuli, the annual Luthuli Legacy Walk and Fun Run on Saturday, July 20 is set to be bigger and better than ever.

The event will commemorate Chief Luthuli’s untimely death in July 1967.

At the launch of the walk held at the Luthuli Museum last Friday, Luthuli’s daughter, Dr Albertina Luthuli expressed her appreciation.

“As the family we are very happy to see this event getting bigger and bigger. I wish I was still young so I could take part! I hope that this year we see the number of athletes doubling from last year,” said Luthuli.

Fun Walk

The 11.5km fun walk will be from the Luthuli Museum on Nokukhanya Luthuli Street at the Memorial Site returning via Chief Albert Luthuli’s grave site at the Groutville United Congregational Church to the Groutville Sports Ground.

On the route is the Aldinville Primary School, where Chief Albert Luthuli began his schooling. Next to it is the King Shaka Observation Rock. The walk will begin at 7am and participants must be back by 11am.

Fun run

The 8km Fun Run will start at the Nonhlevu Store, Gledhow, formerly the shop of Chief Albert Luthuli. The run also passes Nkukwini Primary School, past Chris Hani Hall to connect to the R102. The run will join Nokukhanya Luthuli Street, past the Luthuli Museum which is the home of Chief Albert Luthuli and Mama Nokukhanya Luthuli and proceed to the finish line at the Groutville Sports Ground. The race begins at 8am and runners must be back by 10am.

Like last year there will be an aerobics warm up and cool down session. The warm up will start at 6am – 6.45am at the Luthuli Museum. The cool down will be held for all to enjoy at 9am at the Groutville Sports Ground.

The walk also includes a variety of activities that form part of the programme at the Luthuli Museum to celebrate Luthuli Week, including poetry and chess.

This year there will also be a new element added to Luthuli week, with the Luthuli Golf Day held at the Umhlali Country Club on Wednesday, July 19.

Registration for the Legacy Walk and Fun Run closes on July 17. The entry fee is R80 for the fun walk and R100 for the fun run. Seniors (60 years +) pay half price.
