KwaDukuza drag racer hits 400m in 13 seconds flat, claims first prize at Mkuze Drags

With his aspirated Golf 2.0 16V, Mikhael is hoping to better his personal best time before the final event of the season at Mkuze Airport in December.

With drag-racing and motorsport in his blood, KwaDukuza’s Mikhael Timothy has delivered another victory.

The annual ‘Mkuze Drags’ event was held at Mkuze airport on May 25, with Mikhael finishing first in the 400m event, in a time of 13.0s flat.

The win at Mkuze made it 3 for 3 this year, after Mikhael won at Endumeni Motorsport Club in March and at Dezzi Raceway in April.

“He came first in the 4AF class, which means the car has to have four cylinders and be aspirated,” said Anley Timothy, Mikhael’s father.

Anley is a past champion in the event, setting a number of KwaZulu-Natal records in 2006.

Motorsport was an instant way to bond for the father-son duo and they have not looked back since.

“I would like to thank God for safe travel and racing, but also my father for being such a good mentor and Mikayla, my sister,” said an elated Mikhael.

With his aspirated Golf 2.0 16V, Mikhael is hoping to better his personal best time before the final event of the season at Mkuze Airport in December.

The event comes with a prize of R5 000 and is the only paid event of the season, adding another level of competition.

“We do it as a hobby because we love cars, but it is always good to race with money on the line,” said Anley.

It is far from a two-man team however, and Mikhael emphasised the support from everyone that made the victory possible.

“A further thanks goes to my uncle, Gideon, for pushing me to go faster as well as to Sagren and Keolen of Gsport Developments. I would also like to thank my sponsors, Active Doors and Timber, SESE Precision Engineering, The Workshop and Sizabantu Spares.”
