Ballito butcher tackles 100-mile ultramarathon to raise funds for Waynol rehab
He raised just over R63 000 for Waynol Christian and Anti-Narcotics Manor, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre.
When his Comrades plan was delayed last year by the coronavirus pandemic, runner Warrick ‘Woza’ Taylor decided to adapt his plans, turning months of training into raising funds for those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.
The Ballito butcher and runner set out on an incredible 100-mile ultramarathon last month.
He raised just over R63 000 for Waynol Christian and Anti-Narcotics Manor, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre.
Braving extreme conditions, 4 159 m of vertical climbing and lung-searing altitudes between 1 600m and 3 500m, Taylor ran through the night to cover the Ultra-Trail Drakensberg (UTD160) 164 kilometre event in a time of 43:37:35, – an epic achievement.
Taylor, who has completed a Comrades marathon every year for the past 20 years described the gruelling 100 miler as a “monster of a race”.
What motivated him to keep going was the support of his seconds and knowing that people were supporting him for a good cause.
“I believe perhaps the finest form of living is to get involved with something bigger than yourself and to do something for someone else, who you may not even know. I am humbled by the work Craig and his team at Waynol are doing,” he said.
